Perfectly Seamless Tooth Restoration

A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over a tooth that has been broken, treated with a root canal, damaged by decay, stained, or misshapen. Designed to blend naturally with the colour and shape of your existing teeth, crowns provide both strength and aesthetics while lasting 15 years or more with proper care.

Crowns are also used to anchor dental bridges, restore dental implants, or enhance the appearance of a tooth for cosmetic reasons. Whether for protection, restoration, or aesthetics, a dental crown is a seamless, durable solution for a healthier, more confident smile.

What’s the Process of Getting a Crown?

A dental crown procedure typically requires two office visits and is performed by a dentist. Here’s what to expect:

Examining and Preparing the Tooth

As with any dental procedure, we begin with a comprehensive examination to check the condition of your teeth. The dentist will clean the tooth and, if it’s broken or severely decayed, remove the damaged areas to ensure a stable foundation for the crown. This step is crucial for protecting the tooth and preventing further decay or damage.

Shaping the Crown

Next, we take a precise impression of your teeth using dental putty or digital scanning technology. This impression is used to custom-craft your permanent crown, ensuring a perfect fit. While your custom crown is being fabricated, we will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth. If you are receiving a dental implant, we will take an impression of the implant and surrounding teeth to create a natural-looking, seamless restoration.

Placing the Crown

During your second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and replace it with your permanent custom crown. The new crown is secured with durable dental cement or a hidden screw, ensuring a strong and lasting fit. Finally, we polish the crown and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it feels comfortable, secure, and natural. With the right care, your dental crown can last for over 15 years, providing you with a strong, beautiful, and fully functional smile!

Cost of Dental Crowns in Burlington

The cost of a dental crown can vary depending on several factors, including insurance coverage, materials used, and the complexity of the procedure. On average, with dental insurance, a single crown typically costs between $200 and $600+. Without insurance, the price generally falls within the range of $800 to $1,200 or more. While a dental crown is often a necessary investment to restore function and appearance, we understand that cost may be a consideration.

What Affects the Cost of a Dental Crown? Several factors determine the final cost of your crown, including:

  • Type of Crown & Materials Used – Options like porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys impact pricing.
  • Procedure Complexity & Tooth Location – Some placements require more time and precision.
  • Number of Crowns Needed – More crowns mean a higher overall cost.
  • Combination with Other Dental Work – Crowns may be used alongside bridges, implants, or other restorations.
  • Specialized Equipment & Supplies – Custom treatment plans may involve additional tools or procedures.

Why an In-Person Consultation is Essential?

Every dental case is unique, and no practice can provide an exact quote over the phone. The best way to get an accurate estimate is through an oral exam with a dentist, who will assess your needs and discuss your treatment options.

If you have dental insurance, we’d be happy to provide a detailed quote that you can submit to your provider. This will help you determine your out-of-pocket costs before making a decision. A dental crown is an investment in your oral health, ensuring your smile stays strong, functional, and beautiful for years to come!

Contact us today

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether a crown is needed after a root canal depends on the tooth’s location. Molars and premolars, which endure the most chewing pressure, almost always require a crown for added strength. However, incisors and canines, which experience less biting force, may not always need one. Your dentist will determine the best option for your situation.

Crowns and fillings serve different purposes. While fillings work well for small to moderate cavities, a crown is a much more durable solution for teeth with larger biting surfaces. Fillings, especially on molars, can wear down, chip, or come loose over time due to chewing pressure or teeth grinding. A crown, covering the entire tooth from gumline to gumline, is designed to withstand more force and last significantly longer.

Dental crowns serve two key purposes: they restore function so you can chew without pain, and they blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth. Crowns are custom-made to match the colour, shape, and contour of your surrounding teeth. In fact, they look so natural that many patients forget which tooth has the crown!

A dental post is not the same as a dental implant, which is surgically placed in the jawbone. Instead, a post is a medical-grade support cemented into a root canal-treated tooth when there isn’t enough healthy tooth structure left to securely hold a crown. It reinforces the base of the crown, ensuring a stronger, more stable restoration.

Getting a crown is a comfortable procedure, similar to getting a filling. We take our time to numb the area completely, ensuring zero pain during the procedure. Afterward, you may experience mild sensitivity or soreness in the gums for a short time. If you experience dental anxiety, let us know! We’re here to make your visit as calm and comfortable as possible.

On average, dental crowns last around 15 years. However, with excellent oral care, they can last 25-30 years or more.

Maintaining a dental crown is just like caring for a natural tooth. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and attend routine dental checkups to keep both your crown and the surrounding gum tissue healthy. With proper care, your crown will stay strong and beautiful for decades!

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I’ve been going to Fairview Dental since I was little. I brought my daughter today for her first ever dental visit. Brianna was so patient and kind with her; she listened to what she was and was not comfortable with. Dr. Stevens was amazing too and gave me a lot of helpful information and insight into how my daughter’s teeth are growing and the health of her mouth/teeth as a whole. It was such a wonderful first visit for Amelia. She loves her new Bluey toothbrush and the fact she got gold coins to put into the prize machine at the end. She’s excited to come back for another visit!
